Bavarian Minister of Economics, Martin Zeil
Munich in September: More than 130 years after the invention of the combustion engine the course is now set for future drive concepts: According to a current study, one out of ten newly sold vehicles will be equipped with an electric or hybrid drive by 2020. Until then around eight million electric and hybrid vehicles will be found on European roads and approximately 1.5 million on German roads. For manufacturers, the electric mobility trend is turning into a several billion dollar market. In Germany alone, cumulated sales of electric vehicles will increase from 20 to 74 billion Euros according to estimates. Energy providers will also benefit considerably from this promising development.
According to Martin Zeil, Bavarian State Minister for Economy, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology, "The automotive, electric and mechanical engineering industries are pillars of the Bavarian economy. The Federal Government and the Free State of Bavaria have therefore implemented a number of programs to acquire key competence in electric mobility. One important step to test the marketability of electrically driven vehicles is, for example, the promotion of a model region; a project that has already been launched in Munich and in the Allgaeu region. To speed up developments in electric mobility, the State Government will again grant the eCarTec Award 2011, the Bavarian state prize for electric mobility. The participants at this competition will go up against other international competitors and can use this award as an opportunity to present themselves to potential clients. Moreover, by competing for the eCarTec Award, participants can highlight their innovative competence, thus supporting the market position of their products and technologies."
Innovative ideas have driven the 60 entries for the eCarTec Award 2011. The fact that numerous international participants have contributed their ideas is proof of the great interest in the competition, which was held for the second time. On 12 September 2011, a high-ranking jury selected the most interesting entries and nominated three submissions per category.
